Icecats dodge Buffs with pair of wins

For the second week in a row, the Icecats' skill level clearly outmatched the ability of their opponents. But unlike last weekend, when UA split a two-game series with ASU, the Icecats were able to translate their talent into a pair of victories for their first weekend sweep of the season on home ice.
UA handled Colorado, 5-1 and 5-4, Friday and Saturday at the Tucson Convention Center during two games marked by physical play.
Although they out-shot Colorado 43-18 during Friday's game, the Icecats were unable to put the Buffaloes away until a three-goal spurt in the third period.
The first line of seniors Kyle Neary and Kevin Meehan, and junior Dave Loftus contributed four of the Icecats' goals - including two by Meehan.
While only facing 18 shots, freshman goalie Bryan Aronchick was forced to make several tough saves in order to secure the victory for the Icecats.
UA had to fight through the "clutch and grab" style of Colorado throughout the two-game series, and senior Dave Gallardini took matters into his own hands Friday night, earning a game misconduct for fighting and a one-game suspension.
Even without their co-captain and defensive leader, the Icecats managed to jump to an early lead Saturday night, handing their young goalie a 4-1 lead after two periods. UA added a goal in the third period in the victory.
"We worked hard for 60 minutes in both games, and we almost didn't have much to show for it," Golembiewski said. "We outplayed Colorado but the point is to put the puck in the net, and we're having some trouble doing that."
Neary continued his torrid scoring pace with his third hat trick in as many weekends on Saturday, while linemate Loftus added a goal, and Meehan handed out two assists. Sophomore Andrew Fredricks also found the net for UA, and Aronchick made 22 saves for his fifth victory of the season.
Assistant coach Brian Meehan said while the final scoreboards showed two close contests, his team's performance indicated otherwise.
"We had close to 50 shots in each game, but were only able to score five goals," Meehan said. "We lacked some intensity until the third period of the Friday's game.
"While the games remained close scorewise, I thought for the most part we outplayed them."
Golembiewski - who substituted liberally throughout the weekend - said he is still looking for more consistency out of his second offensive line.
"At this point it's a mix-and-match thing, trying to see what works and get things rolling," Golembiewski said. "So far, the play of our first line and Aronchick has been the difference.
"Our team is certainly making progress. We just need to keep playing games."
