The Arizona soccer team looked like a different team Sunday afternoon against No. 2 Stanford.

The Wildcats (5-11-1, 2-6-0 Pacific 10 Conference) - who lost 2-1 to No. 23 California in overtime Friday night - took a major step back in their 5-0 loss to the Cardinal.

"We needed to respond from Friday's close defeat - it was not one of our better efforts," UA head coach Cathy Klein said.

After battling with the Cardinal (13-2-1, 6-1-0 Pac-10) for the majority of the first half, Arizona could not hold Stanford back in the second frame.

The Wildcats held Stanford scoreless for the first 36 minutes of the game before Robyn deHay headed the ball in the goal to give Stanford a 1-0 advantage.

Three minutes later, Stanford's Katie Wayland scored a goal of her own make it 2-0. The Cardinal would add three more goals in the second half and handed Arizona its second-straight loss of the weekend.

Despite holding off Stanford for the majority of the first half, Wildcat players said their effort was not as strong as it has been in the past.

"It just didn't feel like we had the spirit," sophomore Liz Bartlett said. "All I can say is that it probably came down to heart and effort and we didn't have that at all. We let this one get the best of us and we didn't show up to play."

"Stanford is a great team - they're well coached. (They are) the No. 2 team in the land and beat us like the No. 2 team in the land," Klein said. "But we are better than what we represented today and we just have to get after it."

Although Arizona seemed to hold their own in the first half, Klein said she knew the Wildcats were in trouble when her reserves played a leading role in this game.

Klein - for the first time all season - began substituting early in the first half.

"I think our reserves did a quality job and they played major minutes," Klein said. "I started substituting six minutes into the game. I hadn't done that all year."

On Friday against Cal, the Wildcats lost 2-1 in overtime, after taking a 1-0 lead into the half courtesy of Liz Bartlett's fifth goal of the season with just 31 seconds remaining.

Cal's Laura Schott later put the Golden Bears on the scoreboard in the second half with a shot from 10 yards out.

With the score tied 1-1 at the end of regulation, the game was sent to sudden-death overtime, where Schott gave Golden Bears the win with a shot over Arizona goalkeeper Shannon Monti.

With one more game remaining in the season, Klein said she has seen two distinct Wildcat teams, and said that in order to beat ASU on Friday, the Wildcats must choose which team they want to be.

"I think the difference is us," Klein said. "We can be as talented as any team in this Pac-10 Conference when we are the team we were on Friday. We know we have a lot of work ahead of us."
