Arizona vs. No. 2 Maryland Tonight, 7 p.m. TV: ESPN2
Arizona has never lost to Maryland. The last time the teams met, the Wildcats defeated the Terps 97-90 in the NCAA Sweet 16 in Anaheim in 1998.
Arizona - The Wildcats come into the tournament unranked for the first time since 1990. The youthful team has plenty of untested talent but few seasoned veterans. After finishing as national runner-up last season, head coach Lute Olson is trying to keep his team among the nation's elite, though most experts have picked the team to finish in the middle of the Pacific 10 Conference.
Players to watch
Arizona - Ricky Anderson, 6-foot-9 junior forward.
Anderson, a career perimeter player, has worked on his inside game after redshirting last season. Anderson has not played a college game since scoring 12 points in a loss to Wisconsin in the second round of the 2000 NCAA Tournament.
Jason Gardner - 5-foot-10 junior guard.
Gardner averaged 10.6 points and 4.4 assists last season for the Wildcats. Gardner is a quick guard with a streaky outside shot, but will be asked to carry much of the scoring load this season.
Maryland - After a season of being compared to Atlantic Coast Conference rival Duke, the Terrapins are ready to come into their own. The Terps return four starters from last years Final Four team, including preseason All-Americans Lonnie Baxter and Juan Dixon.
Players to Watch
Lonnie Baxter, 6-foot-9 senior center.
A preseason All-American, Baxter averaged 15.5 points per game last season and pulled down 7.6 rebounds. A physical force inside, Baxter also gets in foul trouble often.
Juan Dixon, 6-foot-3 junior guard. Also a preseason All-American, Dixon is a quick guard with an excellent outside shot. Last season, he averaged a team-high 18.4 points per game and shot 42 percent from three-point range.
No. 5 Florida vs. No. 17 Temple Today, 4:30 p.m. TV: ESPN2
Last season, Temple handed Florida its worst loss of the season, a 21-point beating in the second round of the NCAA tournament. Today's game should be a matchup between the Gators' explosive offense and the Owls' stifling defense.
Florida - The preseason loss of Teddy Dupay will hurt the Gators, but there is plenty of other talent at head coach Billy Donovan's disposal. The two-time defending South Eastern Conference champions have their sights on a national championship. With All-Americans in the both the frontcourt and backcourt, the Gators bring a tough inside-outside game into the tournament.
Players to Watch
Udonis Haslem, 6-foot-9 senior center. A preseason All-American, Haslem has a punishing inside game, but a very soft touch.
Bret Nelson, 6-foot-4 junior guard. Also a preseason All-American, Nelson averaged 15.3 points and 1.75 steals per game last season.
Temple - Newly inducted NCAA Hall-of-Famer John Chaney enters his 20th season as the head coach of the Owls. Led by preseason All-American Lynn Greer, the Owls are looking to build on their success last season, when they reached the regional final of the NCAA tournament.
Players to Watch
Lynn Greer, 6-foot-2 senior guard. Temple's backcourt leader, Greer averaged 18.2 points and 5.5 assists per game.
Kevin Lyde, 6-foot-10 senior center. Lyde battled injury last season but had a very strong NCAA Tournament, averaging 13.8 points and 7.5 rebounds per game.
