CD Review: TRL Christmas

(Atlantic)

Grade:
D

What happened to Christmas? What happened to Christmas music? MTV is what happened, and it's ruining the spirit of the season.

Growing up, there were always the fond sounds of Nat King Cole and Bing Crosby crooning to us during the holidays. Now, there is a complete lack of anything special going on, music-wise, for the holidays. People have been turned into faceless demographics and have been fed rewrapped crap that is a disgrace to any music lover. Even TRL host Carson Daly cannot be found anywhere on this CD - probably because he was too embarrassed by the content!

First the CD starts out with pop/crap singer Willa Ford doing a whiny song called "Santa Baby," in which she recites her entire wish list for Christmas. In the words of Charlie Brown: "Good grief!"

And of course, TRL staples Christina Aguilera, 'N Sync, Sugar Ray and Blink-182 are featured on the list. The Blink track is funny - but it was funnier when they first played it on KROQ's Christmas years ago! Weezer also has a great Christmas song, which was also released ages ago. Probably the worst thing on the CD is Bif Naked's (whose name alone makes gagging seem fun) rendition of "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus," which is about as close to hell one can get during the holidays.

If for some reason you happen to be looking for a half-assed Christmas compilation or just want to tell someone you really don't want to see them again, then buy this album. Otherwise do everyone a favor and take the $16.99 you would have spent on the CD and spread the holiday spirit by feeding someone less fortunate than yourself.
