Though the veterans on the UA women's tennis team played well this weekend in the ECK Classic at Notre Dame, it was Arizona freshman Maja Mlakar who stole the show.
Mlakar defeated Marjorie Terburgh, 6-4, 6-2, Sunday to improve her record to 3-0 in the tournament.
"There was incredible competition at the tournament," said Mlakar, a native of Maribor, Slovenia. "I was happy to see the team do so well."
UA sophomore Debbie Larocque also won her three singles matches.
Larocque, ranked No. 85 in the country, defeated No. 48 Becky Varnum of Notre Dame and Texas A&M's Jessica Roland.
Mlakar and Larocque also paired successfully in doubles competition.
After a disappointing loss to Indiana's Karie Schlukebir and Linda Tran, the UA duo fought back to defeat Notre Dame's Lindsay Green and Varnum.
"I was a little worried after the first match," said Mlakar. "But Debbie and I came back strong in the next match."
UA sophomore Perrine Pernin and freshman Marie-Pier Pouliot both won their matches Sunday.
The Wildcats entered the tournament as the only team that did not earn a berth in the NCAA Tournament last spring.
The three-day event pitted each team - Texas A&M, Indiana, Notre Dame and Arizona - against a different opponent each day.
This was the final preseason tournament for the Wildcats, who begin their season Jan. 18, when they will compete in the Pac-10 Indoor Championships in Seattle.
