Britney Spears at the Staples Center

Photos and text by Randy Metcalf

ARIZONA DAILY WILDCAT

- Wednesday November 28, 2001

Britney Spears was right when she sang "I'm not that innocent" during her opening song, "Oops! I Did It Again" at Staples Center in Los Angeles Nov. 21. Spears spent the majority of the concert touching her chest and stomach in front of a sold-out crowd.

Spears will soon turn 20 years old, but her age hasn't stopped a growing number of critics from questioning her revealing clothing and seductive dancing.

She took a break about halfway through the concert to address her critics.

"I know people say a lot of things about me for the things that I say and don't say and the clothes that I wear," Spears explained as she sat on a piano bench and wiped sweat from her brow. "But I'm not a little girl anymore."

Spears' show featured 13 costume changes, countless stage themes and even a digital image of herself with which she danced.

The concert was filled with special effects ranging from 10-foot flame bursts to a full-fledged rainstorm during the encore, when Spears - clad in a clear, plastic cowboy hat - floated above the crowd, suspended by cables.

Ironically, Spears' age might be her demise. She may have already reached her peak - she just performed in Las Vegas for her own HBO special, is on a world tour and is sponsored by one of the biggest soft drink companies in the world - but she's getting older.
