After an impressive win Saturday over Oregon, the UA women's basketball team honored its two seniors in their last game in McKale Center.
Aimee Grzyb, a guard from San Jose, Calif., has been a four-year starter for the Wildcats, and will end her career as one of the top players in the program's history. Grzyb has started 99 of the 117 games she's played in. She's played 3,654 minutes for the UA, and by next weekend, should become Arizona's all-time leader in minutes played.
Since Grzyb's arrival in Tucson, the deep ball has been her specialty. This weekend, she climbed to second in UA history in 3-pointers made with 191.
"I'm just so proud of her. From the moment she put on a uniform, she contributed here," said head coach Joan Bonvicini.
Grzyb is averaging just over 10 points per game this season and is shooting 32 percent from beyond the arc.
"It's pretty sad, but it was a good way to end," Grzyb said about the team's sweep against the Oregon schools this weekend.
Guard Jessica Duger was a walk-on at the UA in 2001 after transferring from Yavapai College. She has played in 18 games in a Wildcat uniform. Duger seized her opportunity in the spotlight on senior day to earn her career high with seven points in just four minutes of play.
"I was really proud of (Duger). It was good to see her make a few shots and smile," Grzyb said.
A postgame ceremony featured a photo montage of Grzyb and Duger on McKale's big screen, followed by the history of their careers at the UA. Each player had the opportunity to speak, when they thanked friends, family and teammates.
Duger said a special "thank you."
"I'd like to thank the tutors for keeping me eligible to play basketball," she said with a smile, as her teammates laughed.
Grzyb and Duger leave the rest of the team to continue the 27-game home winning streak they helped achieve. But before the duo is done at Arizona, there are still two Pacific 10 Conference games, a Pac-10 tournament and, in all likelihood, an NCAA tournament to play.
