The Associated Press named Arizona sophomore basketball stars Shawntinice Polk and Andre Iguodala honorable mention All-Americans this week, while three Wildcats also received all-academic nods from the Pac-10.
Polk, a 6-foot-5 center from Hanford, Calif., received the same honor last season, after a stellar freshman campaign that saw her average 17.4 points and 10.8 rebounds per game en route to being named Pacific 10 Conference Freshman of the Year. Polk followed suit in her second season, averaging 16.6 points, 10.3 boards and more than two blocks per game while leading the Wildcat women's squad to a share of the Pac-10 regular season title and a 24-9 overall mark.
Iguodala finished behind three other Wildcats on the scoring charts but still led the UA men's team in rebounds, assists and steals in his first year as a starter. The 6-foot-6 forward from Springfield, Ill., averaged 12.9 points, 8.4 rebounds and 4.9 assists, the only Pac-10 player among the league's top 20 in each category. Iguodala also tallied three triple doubles this season, already the second-most in Pac-10 history.
Iguodala also earned all-academic second team honors from the Pac-10, while senior teammate Jason Ranne earned a first-team nod after playing in a career-best 23 games this season. Ranne, who's set to graduate this year with a degree in political science, has a 3.642 GPA while Iguodala, who has yet to decide on a major, carries a GPA of 3.098.
On the women's side, sophomore guard Katrina Lindner, a native of Glengowrie, Australia, was named Pac-10 all-academic honorable mention for her efforts in the classroom and the hardwood. Lindner came back to play this season after suffering her second ACL tear in two years early last year. She saw action in 32 of Arizona's 33 games.
