Multiple acts of vandalism, including graffiti and pellet gunshots, plagued Graham-Greenlee Residence Hall over spring break.
According to police reports, 16 doors on the third floor of the Greenlee side of the residence hall were covered with graffiti and sexual slurs made with black and blue permanent markers. Police believe the vandalism occurred sometime between 2 a.m. and 8 a.m. March 13.
A student living on the third floor of Graham-Greenlee had her window, which faced La Paz Residence Hall, shot at with a pellet gun around the same time.
Sgt. Eugene Mejia, UAPD spokesman, said the two incidents were probably not related since they involved two different crimes.
Mejia said the pellet gun incident was probably related to previous pellet gun shootings that have taken place in and around La Paz, including one that injured a female student in the thigh while she was walking in front of La Paz on Feb. 26.
Rachel Spector, a psychology freshman, said several of the residents had cleaned up the graffiti before the end of spring break.
Spector said she never saw the vandalism because she was already out of town, but still felt affected by it.
"It's upsetting that someone is bored enough to do something like that with no real reason for doing it," she said.
Spector said residents of Graham-Greenlee think a fellow resident committed the acts of vandalism.
"It's hard to understand why someone would mess up their own home," she said.
Jim Van Arsdel, director of Residence Life, also said he believes a resident of Graham-Greenlee vandalized the residence hall because it was only open to residents during the time the crime occurred.
Van Arsdel said if the person were caught, he or she would not automatically be kicked out of the dorms.
"This is a crime viewed as being less dangerous. There are no clear repercussions laid out," he said. "It would all depend on the facts of the case."
Mejia said UAPD is relying on help from the community since there aren't many details on the pellet gun and vandalism cases.
