Police assigned two students to the Dean of Students Diversion Program after they found them with marijuana and narcotic paraphernalia Wednesday, reports stated.

A resident assistant from Coronado Residence Hall, 822 E. Fifth St., called police at 11:56 p.m. after a student told him that he smelled "marijuana and perfume" coming from a room. When police arrived, they found two students in the room sitting next to a fan pointed toward an open window.

Police found an air freshener on the coffee table and a towel covering the base of the door to the hallway.

One officer also found three open bottles of alcohol in the room, reports stated.

The students said they opened the window and turned on the fan because they were hot, and had previously signed a petition to turn the thermostat down in the hall. The officer said it looked like the students were trying to cover the smell of smoke, reports stated.

One student said they had smoked earlier in the day, but not in the room. He also said he was holding the bottles of alcohol for a friend.

Police found a cigar box in the room that had a bag of marijuana, a glass pipe with residue, seeds, leaves and rolling papers. The student said that a friend had given him the box, but did not tell him what was inside, reports stated.

The student also said that the same friend was in their room smoking marijuana 45 minutes earlier, but did not know where he was or what his telephone number was.

After he was served with the marijuana possession citation and referred to the Diversion Program, one student said he was concerned about a pending theft charge for stealing UA benches, reports stated.

The officer said he would call the student if there was a problem.

A student tried to get an extension on a homework assignment Wednesday by e-mailing his professor a statement that he had overdosed on drugs the night before, reports stated.

The professor got concerned when he could not reach the student. While talking to police in his office, the student called and said that he was not going to hurt himself and that all he wanted was additional help and time for his homework.

The student agreed to meet with the professor and discuss the matter, reports stated.

The officer gave the professor information on mental health resources if the student needed it.

A security guard called police Wednesday after he caught a man trying to steal a backpack from the UofA Bookstore, 1209 E. University Blvd., reports stated.

Two security guards saw the man take a green nylon backpack off a rack, remove a tag and stuff it inside the backpack. He then put it under his arm and walked out the door.

The security guards confronted the man and asked him to come back inside. The man said he was "short on cash" and put the backpack down on a chair, reports stated.

He then said, "Let's make a deal. I'll leave it here and we'll call it even." He then walked out the door.

Police were unable to find the man in the area. The security guards gave a surveillance tape to the police, which provided good facial images of the man, reports stated.

The security guards said they would like to press charges if the man was caught, reports stated.

A student's laptop was stolen from her room in La Paz Residence Hall, 602 N. Highland Ave., on Tuesday, reports stated.

The window and front door were locked, but the door to the adjoining bathroom was unlocked, reports stated.

Police questioned the neighbor, who said she was in her room during the time of the theft, but heard nothing suspicious, reports stated.

Police were unable to find the woman's roommate.
