Human Resources to launch online application system
UA Human Resources plans to launch the UA's first online employment and application system in February.
Cathy Nicholson, SAC-Human Resources liaison, reported at the Jan. 13 Staff Advisory Council meeting that the new system, Career Track, will make advertising jobs and collecting applications much faster and easier.
With the new system, departments will be able to create a job requisition, post a position and arrange for advertising through a single online process. Read more details on the UA's first online employment and applicant system, Career Track, at the News Services Web site.
Einstein's Protˇgˇs program earns government grant
The UA has received a $480,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Education for its innovative program of helping students help themselves. Einstein's Protˇgˇs recruit university students as preceptors to help other students in the same class. The students form study teams led by student preceptors who have been trained by the Teaching Teams Program.
The federal grant runs for three years, after which the UA is expected pick up the cost. In the fall semester, Einstein's Protˇgˇs involved two foundational courses and five freshman composition classes. The goal is to add six to 10 additional courses each semester. By the end of the grant in the spring of 2006, the group hopes to be working with 20-25 courses each semester.
Live feed from next Mars rover to air at Flandrau Science Center
Students, faculty and staff will get free seats to watch NASA land its second rover on Mars Saturday at the UA Lunar and Planetary Laboratory.
At 10 p.m., NASA will land its second rover on Mars, and UA scientists have invited the public to join them in watching a live feed of the landing on LPL's giant video screen. They held a similar free showing of the first landing earlier this month that played to an overflow, standing-room-only crowd.
The live feed is part of an open house that's sponsored by LPL and Flandrau Science Center and Planetarium. The event, called "Space Mania II, Spirit and Opportunity," runs from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. The free admission only applies to UA CatCard holders ÷ otherwise, tickets range from $2 to $5.50.
