Students suffering from caffeine withdrawals while cramming for tests can look forward to the grand opening of a new coffee shop.
Java City, located inside the Arizona Health Sciences Library, will open to the general public on Monday.
"We are trying to get more people to come to the library," said Connie Silverstein, director of support services. "We are creating an atmosphere that is more like Borders (Bookstore)."
Couches, computer ports and study group areas have been added near the new coffee shop to create a more inviting and useful area for students.
"We are trying to be very student-oriented," said Pat Valles, manager of Java City. "We plan to extend our business hours during finals to accommodate the students."
Students who have regular study sessions in the medical library are a little apprehensive about the plan.
"This library is nice because it's so quiet," said Ardea Davis, a nursing senior. "I hope it doesn't turn into too much of a social place."
Jackie Wyatt, a nursing junior, said the convenient location of the coffee shop is very appealing to studying students.
"It's nice that we can stop here on a break between classes," Wyatt said. "It is more convenient."
Java City will offer an array of items, from specialty coffees to fresh fruit smoothies. They will also serve pastries for breakfast and sandwiches for lunch.
"We will have samples for students to try throughout the week," Valles said.
Prices are competitive, with an average of $2.59 for an espresso, and planners are confident about the new shop.
"This is a better location for medical students," Silverstein said. "It is a more convenient area of the hospital to get coffee."
Java City will be open Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
