The Arizona women's swimming and diving team posted two Pacific 10 Conference titles while breaking a Pac-10 meet record to move into second place at the Pac-10 Championships in Washington yesterday.
Senior Emily Mason won the 500-yard freestyle while sophomore Whitney Myers finished third and qualified for the NCAAs.
In the 50y freestyle, three swimmers made the finals for the Wildcats as junior Jenna Gresdal placed third (22.77), junior Marshi Smith finished fifth (22.98) and freshman Courtney Cashion finished seventh (23.00).
The 200y freestyle relay team made up of Gresdal, senior Jessica Hayes, Smith and Cashion won the Wildcats' other conference title setting the Pac-10 record besting California's time in 2002.
"We had a really good night tonight," said head swimming coach Frank Busch. "The girls are doing a great job swimming and we are really excited for Mason and the relay team. Second place is a good place to be right now, I'm really happy with everybody's performances."
On the diving side for the women, senior Daniela Bemme and Claire Febvay finished fifth and seventh, respectively, in the 1-meter event with scores of 277.65 and 265.35 points.
"I am really pleased with the two seniors," said head diving coach Michele Mitchell-Rocha. "They were consistent and solid and that is what it will take to get to the NCAA championships."
As a team, Arizona trails just Stanford for the team title, but are more than 50 points behind the Cardinal.
The conference championships will resume tomorrow at noon with the finals being held at 6 p.m.
