The Arizona men's tennis team is back at home and back on the winning track.
The No. 42 Wildcats (7-4) defeated the Memphis Tigers 6-1 yesterday at Robson Tennis Center.
The Wildcats' one-two punch of senior Colin O'Grady and junior Roger Matalonga, the No. 22 doubles team in the country, started off the match defeating Memphis' Scott Felsenthal and James Spence, 8-5.
Arizona freshman Claudio Christen and junior Tim Mullane defeated the Tigers' Alex Jago and Mark Finnegan, 8-6.
Arizona junior Daniel Andrus and freshman Bruno Alcala lost to the Tigers' Alex Bucewicz and Marten Tamla, 5-8.
In singles play, O'Grady beat No. 88 Bucewicz in a tough back-and-forth match, which ended 7-6 (7-4), 7-5.
On court two, No. 48 Matalonga defeated Memphis' Spence 6-2, 5-7, 10-5 in a super tiebreaker, a shortened match that is played when the overall meet has already been decided.
Andrus, who is working his way back from a stress fracture in his foot, had his first real test yesterday. Andrus passed with a victory over Memphis' Jago 6-4, 6-7 (2-7), 7-6 (7-4).
On court four, Alcala got back to his winning ways with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Memphis' Tamla.
The Wildcats' Christen defeated the Tigers' Finnegan 6-3, 6-3.
In Arizona's only point lost, Mullane was defeated 3-6, 4-6, by Memphis' Felsenthal.
Head coach Bill Wright and assistant coach Tad Berkowitz said they were extremely pleased with the way the guys played yesterday.
"The guys played well," Berkowitz said. "They enjoyed playing at home, they came out relaxed and with a businesslike effort."
Berkowitz said they did a great job of staying focused. He added that he was especially happy with how O'Grady is coming around.
"Colin's doing a great job," Berkowitz said. "He's playing with confidence and composure."
Berkowitz said he is also happy Andrus is getting healthier.
"It was good for Dan to get a long, tough match and win," Berkowitz said. "After an injury, it takes a while to get your wind back, and this match showed that he's getting there."
Arizona's next matches are back-to-back Friday and Saturday at Robson Tennis Center against No. 9 Southern California and No. 8 UCLA.
