They can leave, but they will always be remembered.
The Gymcats' practice facility is outlined with pictures of past Arizona gymnasts who flourished in their time here. Soon, Arizona will be putting up some more photos.
Tonight, six seniors will be participating in their last home meet for the Arizona gymnastics team: Monica Bisordi, Katie Johnson, Jamie Schell, Stevie Fanning, Jamie Duce and Kristine Harper.
"It's bittersweet," said Gymcats head coach Bill Ryden. "These girls were integral as freshman, and they have been going since then. This is a huge chunk of the team walking out the door."
The Gymcats play host tonight at McKale Center to Ball State, Texas Women's and Cal-State Fullerton at 7:30 p.m.
The departing seniors will be honored in a post-meet ceremony.
"It's exciting that we're seniors, but it's crazy," Schell said. "Everything went by so fast. I feel like I'm a freshman."
Despite the seniors' departure, the future looks bright for the Gymcats.
Last week, freshman Danielle Hicks won her first all-around title, while competing in the event for only the second time in her career.
Freshman Karin Wurm and Rachelle Silberg have put up consistent scorers all year long and look to contribute even more in the future.
"Aubrey (Taylor) and Erin (Muirhead) will be the most experienced. Danielle and Karin, although sophomores, will be thrust into a leadership and veteran role," Ryden.said.
The team will be anchored next year by Taylor, who will most likely compete with Hicks and Wurm for all-around titles.
"The program is in great hands," Schell said.
The Gymcats head to College Park, Md., next week for their final regular season meet. They face Maryland, Rhode Island and James Madison.
