As part of their philanthropy program, the Delta Tau Delta fraternity collected canned foods from campus sororities for the Tucson Food Bank and donated money to a local shelter for battered women.
Sororities competed against each other in Delt Games, a 5-day event hosted by DTD to raise money for their philanthropy, said Matt Wood, the fraternity president.
Fraternity members collected the cans Tuesday and donated them to the Tucson Food Bank.
"We had two truckloads and a car full of cans; we ended up donating 2,275 pounds," Wood said.
In Delt Games, the chapters compete in various activities against each other for the most points, Wood said.
"The girls competed in events like skits, banner decorating and a barbecue," Wood said.
In the canned food drive competition, Gamma Phi Beta won with the most cans, Wood said. No specific amounts of cans were reported, but fraternity members said they estimated the winner because there were so many cans.
In addition to the canned food drive, the fraternity also raised $3,000 for The Brewster Center, 2425 N. Haskell Dr., Wood said.
The money donated to the domestic violence center, Wood said, came from the fee the fraternity charged per person for Delt Games.
"Each sorority had to pay per head that participated and besides small funding for Delt Games, all the money went to the Brewster House," Wood said.
Besides philanthropy, Delt Games serves to bring the members of the chapters closer, Wood said.
"We wanted to provide a fun atmosphere." Wood said. "The underlying theme of the events is for philanthopy, but at the same time, we wanted it to be fun and competitive."
