A jungle-themed bash at the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity house, 1509 E. Second St., Saturday afternoon ended with six police officers issuing eight underage drinking citations and a red tag, reports stated.
Two officers arrived on the scene after receiving several noise complaints, and found an estimated 400 to 500 people were inside the fraternity and about 35 to 40 people where outside, reports stated.
When a fight broke out behind the fraternity at 4:54 p.m., police shut down the party and issued a red tag, reports stated.
Sigma Alpha Epsilon President Jeremy Bates was cooperative with police and assisted them in clearing the guests out of the courtyard, reports stated.
"In the grand scheme of things, (the fight was just) a couple guys bickering over a girl," said Bates, an accounting senior.
After the party was shut down, police officers began citing underage students who were in the front lawn, behind the fraternity in an alley and surrounding parking lots, reports stated.
Bates said because they had registered the event with GAMMA there were no underage students drinking at the party and, to his knowledge, the people issued underage drinking citations were people that had been turned away by the fraternity's third party security team for being underage and under the influence.
Police found a man laying face down on his stomach, propping up his torso with his arms, reports stated.
The man urinated on himself in his swim trucks, reports stated. He was cited and released for underage drinking.
One officer found a woman lying on a sidewalk in an alley who appeared to have been drinking excessively, reports stated.
Three of her friends were trying to get her to stand up and get inside a cab, reports stated.
She finally got into the cab but exited one block away and sat back down on the ground, reports stated. The woman was cited for underage drinking and released on the scene.
A man wearing nothing but a swimsuit was walking outside of the fraternity and police smelled an odor of alcohol on his breath, reports stated.
The man admitted to drinking, reports stated.
The officer asked to retrieve the man's keys and he said they were inside his unlocked vehicle, reports stated. Police entered the man's car and smelled burnt marijuana.
The man was cited and released for underage drinking.
Police saw a woman and a man arguing outside of Sigma Alpha Epsilon, and the officer told the man to leave the street and told the woman to go inside a nearby sorority, reports stated.
The woman appeared intoxicated and told police she had an order of protection against the man but did not have any paperwork to prove it, reports stated.
Police asked her to retrieve the documents, and the woman yelled that cops were worthless and continued to complain and insult the officers, reports stated.
Police found the woman in a nearby sorority, and she shrugged when police asked if she had order of protection papers, reports stated.
The woman was cited and released for underage drinking, reports stated.
Bates said the red tag was issued based on Tucson Police Department's common practice in this type of situation.
"I think for the most part the reason for the red tag was they had to come out because of a noise complaint and (issuing a red tag) is their standard procedure," Bates said.
Bates said police responded because of the fight and not because they were running an invalid event.
"(Police) didn't deem the event an unruly gathering, he said. "It was the confrontation in the alley that was unruly."
