While the majority of their teammates enjoy the weekend off, it's on to La Jolla, Calif., for the Arizona track teams' throwers.
The group looks to score big marks in the discus in the Triton Invitational, hosted by UC-San Diego, a meet known for its gusty obstacles.
The wind expected at the event "is the only reason we go out there," said Arizona head coach Fred Harvey. "There's no such thing as a wind-assisted throw, but (the wind) definitely affects (the throws). That's the reason they go there."
Although the wind in La Jolla should be formidable, it's not something completely new to the throwers, said throwing coach John Frazier.
"Arizona benefits from having good wind for discus throwers," he said.
The group, comprised of junior Sean Shields, the Wildcats' school record-holder in the shot put, sophomore Adam Kuehl, senior Ilona Rutjes and freshman Megan Howard, among others, traveled to La Jolla yesterday to start preparing for the meet.
A rare weekend off
Following a rigorous beginning to the outdoor season, one in which some athletes have competed for five straight weeks, the rest of the team will stay home to recuperate.
"We've been going every weekend, so, yeah, it's definitely going to be nice (to get a break)," junior pole vaulter Sam Jacobson said.
The athletes who remain in Tucson will train through today before getting tomorrow and Sunday off.
"(Tomorrow) is going to be more recovery work," Harvey said. "It's really going to get their bodies to relax and truly give them a weekend off."
The men's and women's teams compete in the Double Duel meet with ASU and NAU in Tempe April 30.
