A girl crossing North Euclid Avenue just north of East Sixth Street was struck yesterday by a vehicle traveling southbound, officials said.
UA undeclared freshman Ryan Thomas told police he was traveling southbound in the median lane on North Euclid Avenue and approached a line of stopped traffic. He then switched to the curb lane to avoid stopping and struck the 15-year-old Tucson High School student, said Lisa Peasley, Tucson Police Department spokeswoman.
The woman was crossing the street in a clearly marked pedestrian crosswalk, Peasley said.
Thomas called TPD to report the incident, Peasley said.
University of Arizona Police arrived at the scene and the woman was conscious and alert, said UAPD officer Dustin Goudschaal.
Tucson Fire Department arrived shortly after, and though the woman had no visible injuries, transported her to a local hospital as a precautionary measure, Peasley said.
Goudschaal said all of the traffic in one lane traveling southbound had stopped for the pedestrian, but the student in a white 1987 Honda Accord could not stop in time.
Tucson Police took over the case and questioned the student.
Police cited Thomas for failing to reduce or control speed to avoid an accident, but police do not suspect he was excessively speeding and estimated he was traveling at about 20 mph, Peasley said.
The officer who responded went to University Medical Center to follow up, and the woman had been released without injuries around 6 p.m. yesterday, Peasley said.
No charges are pending and Thomas was released at the scene.
