The Arizona men's tennis team dodged storm clouds en route to victory over the weekend.
The Wildcats ran into some rain delays at the Denver Fall Championships in Denver, the team's second tournament of the fall season.
Rain caused a few matches to be played into yesterday afternoon, after the tournament was expected to finish, said Arizona head coach Tad Berkowitz. Teams had to scramble to indoor facilities to compete.
Berkowitz said that despite the delays, the tournament had gone well for the Wildcats. Arizona sophomores Francois VanderMerwe and Jason Labrosse duked it out in the singles finals in the B flight.
Labrosse edged out VanderMerwe, but Berkowitz said that the match was really a win-win situation.
"We had a Wildcat winning either way," Berkowitz said. "The match also shows that we have a good future with our program. We have got some high-quality guys."
Senior Daniel Andrus and VanderMerwe advanced to the finals in doubles competition but eventually fell.
Berkowitz said that the Wildcats accomplished in Denver what the fall tournaments are good for - gaining experience for the spring season ahead.
The men's tennis team next competes Oct. 6-9 at the ITA Men's All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla.
