UA faculty, Gov. Janet Napolitano to speak at women's workshops
The governor and UA faculty will speak at a women's conference Friday that students can attend for a $95 discount.
The Arizona Women's Conference will be from 8 a.m. to 5:45 p.m. Friday at the Hilton El Conquistador, 10000 N. Oracle Road, said Victoria Bohnsack, a marketing senior and intern for the conference.
Attendees can choose four of eight workshops that will address topics such as physical health, stress management, substance abuse and reproductive health among women, Bohnsack said.
Gov. Janet Napolitano will be the keynote speaker at the luncheon.
Tickets are $30 for college students and full-time high school students with a student ID. Regular admission is $125 and senior citizens pay $60.
UA faculty speaking at the event are Lorraine Mackstaller, Victoria Maizes, Marlene Freeman and Tamsen Bassford.
Bohnsack said she will be attending the event and has promoted it to clubs on campus in hope that students take advantage of it.
"Being involved with the conference has made me more interested in it," Bohnsack said. "Even if I wasn't involved I'd want to promote it as a woman wanting to attend."
'Chip in and chow down'
Students can eat a $4 lunch every day next week and provide relief for farm workers affected by Hurricane Katrina.
The "Chip In and Chow Down for Katrina Relief" punch-hole business cards are being pre-sold this week for $20 at the James E. Rogers College of Law office, said Molly Newburn, the Katrina relief committee chair.
The committee, which was formed Sept. 8 by the Student Bar Association, organized the fundraiser to support the Telamon Farmworker Aid Program, said Newburn, a second-year law student.
Newburn said she hopes to raise $5,000, all of which will be donated to the aid program.
From Monday to Oct. 7, students who bring the card to the College of Law lobby from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. will be served a catered lunch there.
Restaurants Grandma Tony's Pizza, 7010 E. Broadway Blvd., Jimmy John's Gourmet Sandwiches, 749 N. Park Ave., and Simply Mustard's have offered to donate the food for the week.
The Pima County Farm Bureau gave $1,000 to the committee to help with incidental costs of the event, Newburn said.
The committee chose to help a specific group that might face obstacles unique to its community, but they support all the relief efforts that have been held on campus in recent weeks, Newburn said.
"We really feel like it's our responsibility to reach out to the underserved populations as well as those who can receive aid through FEMA and the Red Cross," Newburn said.
