After winning contest, makeup sold out in stores nationwide

A UA student took her first leap into the glamorous world of high fashion and cosmetic design by unveiling her full line of cosmetic products and the celebrating the opening of her flagship store on Friday.

Gabrielle "Gaby" Miller, a pre-business freshman, embarked on her career a year ago when her Cry Baby gossamer and nail color was picked out of tens of thousands of entries to win the Chanel and Seventeen Magazine Colour of the Year contest. [Read article]

UA begins season tonight in Hawaii

There may not be a better place to open any season than Hawaii, where the No. 10 Arizona men's basketball team will begin its 2005-06 campaign tonight at 7 when it faces Kansas in the first round of the EA Sports Maui Invitational.

Arizona left Tucson on Saturday morning at 6, after defeating Team Georgia 104-81 in its final exhibition game Wednesday night, and will make its fourth appearance in the preseason tournament, having won it upon its last entry in 2000. [Read article]

The art of study abroad

If there's one thing Natalie Koch can attest to, it's that things just aren't the same anymore in Aralsk, Kazakhstan. The Dartmouth College geography senior recently returned from a three-week stint in Central Asia to study the effects of poor water-management policies.

Indeed, policies have been inept at best, and destructive at worst: Aralsk, once a booming fishing hub of the Aral Sea, now sits 75 miles from its coast. The desiccation of the Aral Sea has been one of the great environmental catastrophes of our time, and it has been relatively undocumented in the mainstream media - but try to explain that to the dejected fisherman sitting on a bench in Aralsk, watching a swath of desert where a body of water, his former livelihood, once stood. It seems like the perfect vehicle for a romantic farce starring Jack Black, Kirstie Alley or some other overweight comedic actor. Here's the premise: An aging, portly man down on his luck and desperate for some green, tries his hand at the gigolo business.

Scouting out his prospective clients, being the ever-astute statistician, he tries to improve his chances of scoring a meal ticket by not just sending out one letter of seduction but two, both to women who reside in the same town. He also uses the same letter verbatim, recycling the same sweet nothings but being careful enough to switch names when appropriate. [Read article]

Band Day brings out best in Southwest marching bands

With reality television all the rage, showdown competitions seem to be an everyday occurrence. There is the dance off, the sing off and the band off. OK, maybe you have never seen a band off, unless you will admit to actually watching "Drumline," but now you can.

The UA's Pride of Arizona marching band will be hosting its 52nd annual Glassman Foundation University of Arizona Band Day on Saturday, where high schools from all over the Southwest region come to "bring it" - marching band style. [Read article]
