Women's resource center, UAPD among groups at SafeRide-sponsored event
Different clubs and groups were scattered along the UA Mall on Friday, distributing information from their booths about the services they provide for the safety of students and the campus community.
SafeRide sponsored the second annual Campus Safety Fair and hosted representatives from the Women's Resource Center, Parking and Transportation Services, the University of Arizona Police Department, the Brewster Center and the Southern Arizona Center Against Sexual Assault.
The fair provided information about student safety resources from the UA and Tucson communities.
The Women's Resource Center had a booth informing women of the services they will be providing for the rest of the year, including self-defense classes, which are finished for this semester but will begin again in the spring, said Leslie Marasco, director of the Women's Resource center.
Marasco said the Women's Resource Center will be hosting a car maintenance skills workshop for women on Nov. 29, designed to teach women how to change a tire, check and change oil, and perform a car inspection to check for current or future problems.
"It's good to know what's going on with your car," said Marasco, an environmental sciences sophomore. "This workshop will help (women) become more independent and save money in the future."
UAPD officers were on hand to give students safety tips and other reminders to keep them safe on campus.
The UAPD booth provided brochures about underage drinking and vehicle theft, and Officer Frank Romero stressed the importance of knowing your surroundings at all times.
"Students should remember to be aware of their surroundings," Romero said. "It's staying darker longer and getting darker earlier. It's important to remember that when you are parking in the morning."
The event was convenient for students like Walter Yosin, a chemical engineering junior, who was passing through the Mall and decided to stop by the PTS booth to get information about where he can park his motorcycle next semester.
"(PTS) answered all of my questions and I got everything I needed for next year," Yosin said.
