President to discuss border security at Davis-Monthan

President Bush is expected to give a speech today in Tucson at the Davis-Monthan Air Force Base about his concerns with current border security.

The speech, which is not open to the public, is scheduled to begin at 2:40 p.m. and will focus on border security as well as comprehensive immigration reform, said White House spokesman Blair Jones.

In addition to the president, Jones confirmed the Attorney General Alberto Gonzales and Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff are scheduled to appear alongside the president. [Read article]

Hoops evens record in McKale opener after rough road trip

If the No. 9 Arizona men's basketball team was expecting to cure its shooting woes last night against Virginia, it needed to wait 20 minutes before the nets in McKale Center started heating up.

The Wildcats defeated Virginia 81-51 last night, avenging a loss Arizona took against the Cavaliers at University Hall last season, thanks largely to a dominant second half in which the team shot 66.7 percent from the field. [Read article]

Confessions of a vegetarian

photo

Gee whiz, I admire herbivores! And hypocrisy can be a hoot as well.

Thanksgiving is a day for giving thanks. Yeah, I did that, but I took it step further. I had a revelation. After over two decades of living on this planet, it finally hit me - I am a vegetarian.

While enjoying a healthy plate of succulent caramel ham and a sizzling, sizable helping of juicy, oven-baked turkey, it suddenly became obvious. I finally realized that I, in fact, belong to that select group of people who refer to themselves as "vegetarians." After all, next to turkey and ham, there is nothing I like more than a tender 22-ounce cut of prime rib. [Read article]

It seems like the perfect vehicle for a romantic farce starring Jack Black, Kirstie Alley or some other overweight comedic actor. Here's the premise: An aging, portly man down on his luck and desperate for some green, tries his hand at the gigolo business.

Scouting out his prospective clients, being the ever-astute statistician, he tries to improve his chances of scoring a meal ticket by not just sending out one letter of seduction but two, both to women who reside in the same town. He also uses the same letter verbatim, recycling the same sweet nothings but being careful enough to switch names when appropriate. [Read article]

More than 7,000 bike in 23rd annual El Tour de Tucson

As the sun rose over the Santa Catalina Mountains on a chilly Saturday morning, thousands of bicyclists - young and old, experienced and novice - geared up for a daylong adventure.

The adventure: a winding, hilly, dusty 109-mile journey around the perimeter of Tucson, starting and ending near the Tucson Convention Center to raise money for Tu Nidito Children and Family Services, the American Parkinson's Disease Association and the Global Sports Alliance. [Read article]
