Ex-chief of staff was in charge of elections
Student Government Elections Commissioner Tyler Carrell resigned from his position late Wednesday night after three weeks in office.
This marks the second resignation this semester for Carrell, who stepped down from his position as chief of staff for Associated Students of the University of Arizona President Cade Bernsen on Nov. 9.
Carrell, a finance junior, was originally appointed to that position but resigned in order to fill the position of elections commissioner.
The elections commissioner's duties involve overseeing campaigns, conducting general elections and special elections, and ensuring elections are fair.
Three weeks ago, Carrell said he understood the importance of the elections commissioner position because it helps direct the voice of the students.
"I'm very familiar with the elections code and feel qualified and aspire to assume the responsibilities," Carrell said in a Nov. 14 Arizona Daily Wildcat.
At the time, Bernsen said ASUA needed the most competent and experienced person for the job.
"Tyler is that person, and he knows the inner workings of ASUA and would be a perfect fit for the very hectic position. He's sacrificing for us and is filling the gap," Bernsen said in a Nov. 14 Wildcat.
Carrell, who lives with Bernsen, said his resignation has nothing to do with the recent sexual harassment allegations against Bernsen and said he needed more time to focus on his studies.
