Club hockey endures 5-game slide

The No. 12 Arizona men’s club hockey team’s season cooled off with the weather as it lost all five of its games over winter break.

The losses dropped its record to 10-8 on the season.

The Icecats’ struggles were exemplified by their play at the ASU Desert Classic in Tempe.

Arizona lost to host ASU 3-1 Sunday as the No. 9 Sun Devils won their fourth game of five the two teams have played this season.

Arizona also fell 4-3 Friday to the No. 4 Penn State Icers, who went on to win the tournament championship.

The Icecats opened the tournament against No. 5 Iowa State Thursday and lost 3-1.

Arizona struggled against rival ASU at home to start the break, losing to the Sun Devils by scores of 4-2 Dec. 10 and 2-1 Dec. 9 in the Tucson Convention Center Arena.

The Icecats were hampered in the series by the loss of several players suspended in the aftermath of a post-game melee following Arizona’s emotional sweep of No. 6 Weber State.

Arizona was outscored 16-8 during the five-game losing streak, the longest of the season for the Icecats.
