Matalonga, Alcala eliminated early in California
The competition at the National Collegiate Tennis Classic in Palm Springs, Calif., over the weekend proved to be too tough for the Wildcats.
Senior Roger Matalonga, who competed last year in the same tournament, was eliminated in the second round. UCLA freshman Michael Look proved to be too much, winning by a score of 6-3, 6-3.
No. 18 Matalonga defeated Virginia sophomore Andrew Downing in his first match with a dominating score of 6-1, 6-0.
Sophomore Bruno Alcala lost his first match to Virginia sophomore Treat Huey, ranked No. 8, but was able to bounce back and win his opening consolation match over Pepperdine freshman Denis Reinert, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.
In the second consolation round Alcala faced San Diego senior Oscar Plotnik and was eliminated by a score of 6-3, 6-3.
The duo of Matalonga and Alcala paired up for doubles play and lost to Virginia's duo of Huey and sophomore Eric Riley 8-3 in the first round.
Both Matalonga and Alcala will join their teammates for the first team match at home against Montana State Jan. 27 at the Tucson Racquet Club.
