A UA football player was caught with marijuana Monday for the second time in a little over a month.
Yaniv Barnett, undeclared freshman, and three other students were charged with possession of marijuana Monday night at a table in front of the Arizona Stadium, 1425 E. Sixth St.
Barnett was also caught with marijuana Sept. 1 and was referred to the Dean of Students that day.
Barnett and the three students were sitting at the table when police arrived. One of the students started to walk away. He then told police that Barnett and the two other students at the table were smoking marijuana.
Police found a cigar with what looked like marijuana in it in the student's left front pants pocket, reports stated.
Police then approached Barnett and the students. Barnett first gave police a fake name, reports stated.
Police found a plastic bag of marijuana under the table.
Barnett and the three students all admitted to smoking the cigar with marijuana in it.
When police asked who the bag of marijuana belonged to, two of the students said it was Barnett's. Barnett then told police it was not his and was the other two students', reports stated.
Police cited Barnett and the three students for possession of marijuana.
Barnett is a freshman defensive tackle who joined the team this fall out of Cibolo, Texas.
Athletic director Jim Livengood was not available for comment yesterday afternoon because he was at a conference.
Sgt. Eugene Mejia, UAPD spokesman, said he didn't know if Barnett had faced any consequences for the first incident yet.
"It's an unfortunate distraction for a team that's trying to turn around," Mejia said.
Mejia said police go after students who drink or use drugs because alcohol and marijuana can lead to other more violent crimes.
Mejia also said he thinks people repeat offenders should face stiffer penalties and consequences.
