A student is given a Discman and

a CD then asked to opine on each song

Reviewer Bio:

  • pre-business freshman

  • Favorite band: Wu-Tang Clan

  • Least favorite band: Queen

    1. Good Charlotte, "Predictable"

I like the beat. The beat's pretty good. It's kind of an old-school-like, rocky touch. I'm not a big fan of the vocals though. I can see other people at this school liking it, but it's not something I would listen to. I'm not a big fan of it. It sounds like normal rock. I don't know. It's kind of weird. It's basically not my scene.

Wildcat: Does it sound like any other rock bands?

Shihadah: Like Blink-182 maybe. I don't really know too many rock bands.

    2. Britney Spears, "My Prerogative"

It sounds like it would be on TRL or something. It's Britney Spears isn't it?

    Wildcat: Yeah.

Shihadah: It's like dance music. I'm sure it would be all right for a party. It has a nice beat. It's all right. It's upbeat. It's like light music. You don't have to think that much about it. Just listen to it. It seems kind of meaningless.

    Wildcat: Lyrically, you mean?

    Shihadah: Yeah.

    3. Talib Kweli, "I Try"

I could listen to something like this a lot. Definitely a good song. I like this song. I don't know who the girl is. I think the vocals, the girl's vocals are like, I don't know, don't really, it seems like they don't fit in that well. I recognize the artist. It seems like a multi-purpose song. You could listen to this song when you want to relax.

Wildcat: Who else would listen to this?

Shihadah: Anybody who likes rap. It seems like it would reach a wide audience. It's a versatile song.

Brian Wilson, "Vega-tables" (Laughs) Good, funny song. Seems like it could have some hidden meaning or something - I don't know. (To friend) What is this man? It has a '50s feel. I don't know what they call it.

Friend: (listening for about five seconds) I don't know . It sucks. I think it sucks. Maybe I should give it another listen.

Shihadah: Like show bands or whatever. Is this a new song? Is this new?

    Wildcat: Yeah. I think so.

Shihadah: Really? They did a good job making it sound old. It seems like a fun song. It has an old school, '50s kind of style. It's a humorous song.
