While most of the campus had not yet awoken from its slumber, the UA swim and dive program was putting on a show for fans of all ages at Hillenbrand Aquatic Center.
The Wild West Water Show, an annual free event to help get people who attended interested in the sport and offer some free entertainment, was held Saturday on the UA campus.
The event had all the components of a perfect UA event: fun, free and even a bit of ASU bashing.
The crowd at the show was made up mostly of younger fans, but all age groups were represented.
Before the show fans had the chance to get autographs from Arizona swim and dive athletes who made the trek to Athens, Greece, for the Olympics this past summer, including gold medalists Amanda Beard of the United States and Ryk Neethling and Lyndon Ferns of South Africa.
After the autographs, the show got under way, beginning with a tutorial on diving and some synchronized diving, followed by the real excitement of the day: the clown diving, which would make any insurance salesman nervous.
Members of the UA dive team entertained the crowd with their crazy antics, swinging from ropes into the pool, riding a bike off the 10m platform and holding a cannonball contest, a crowd favorite.
Young fan Hannah Sullivan said her favorite part of the show was when one of the dive team members was jumping from one diving board to the next.
Hannah's mother, Gayle Sullivan, said she enjoyed the waterfall stunt, a stunt where 20 divers dive off the 10m platform nearly simultaneously.
"I thought it was awesome. It was fun to see the divers screwing around and not so seriously competitive," said sociology freshman Katherine La Mee. "And it was nice to see the boys."
