ASUA and Hillel to fund election night party at Belushe's
ASUA senators approved funding for an election night party for students Nov. 2 at a local bar.
Belushe's Bar and Grill, 1118 E. Sixth Street, will host a social gathering for all students who want to watch the election results from 6 p.m. to 12 a.m.
All ages are welcome, but security will restrict underage students from the bar area, said Ashley Eden, an ASUA senator.
The party will be co-sponsored by ASUA and the Hillel Foundation.
Senators approved $440 for the party and Hillel will pay for the rest of the cost, which is $150, Eden said.
She said ASUA's portion of the cost includes a DJ, security, food and marketing for the event.
ASUA annual budget and expenditures announced
ASUA announced their annual budget of $6,751.36 and said if proposed ASUA expenditures are approved, the balance will drop to $4,701.36.
Senators approved initial funding requests of $4,033.40 to nine clubs on campus.
Helping Hands, a club that works to provide health care to underserved communities, asked ASUA for money to fund t-shirts and supplies from the bookstore.
The club originally asked for $567.51, but ASUA reduced the price because clubs receive a discount from the UofA Bookstore. Money for T-shirts was removed from the fund request because ASUA, as of this year, automatically covers the cost of T-shirts for clubs that apply for initial funding.
The Aerial Robotics Club, a club that designs and builds autonomous air vehicles, received $159.53 for Fast Copy services.
Cats for Kids, community service club geared towards Tucson's youth, received $476 for travel and supplies.
Phi Alpha Delta, a pre-law fraternity, received $728.90 for an upcoming conference in Washington D.C.
Eclipse, an environmental club, requested $80 to cover admission costs to an event.
ASUA granted the Navigators, a club that promotes spirituality on campus , $773.90 to rent vans for an event in Chinle, Ariz.
New Kevin, an improvisation comedy club, received $366.88 for advertising and a room rental to collect food for the poor.
ASUA granted The National Society of Black Engineers $988 for airline tickets to an upcoming competition, which would cover airfare for four members.
Students Consulting for Non-Profit Organizations received $366.68 for banners and fliers to promote a speaker.
Election dates set for 2005-2006 academic year
ASUA announced dates for its primary and general elections for the 2005-2006 academic year.
The primary elections will be March 1 and March 2 and the general elections will be March 8 and March 9, said Adam Falck, ASUA Elections Commissioner.
Cats RIDDE to curb drunk driving
Other senator reports included an update of Cats RIDDE.
Cats RIDDE would give intoxicated students rides home on the weekends. The driving service would be open to all UA students, despite their age.
The budget for Cats RIDDE is still being assembled and senators are working to fund liability.
Once the budget is passed, Cats RIDDE could begin as early as this academic year.
Discussion about a mandatory meal plan continues
Nathan Bell, an ASUA senator, said he has organized a student task force to discuss the idea of a mandatory meal plan.
Bell said the task force will work closely with Dan Adams, director of the Student Union Memorial Center, to listen to student ideas about a possible mandatory plan.
"We want many students involved in the process," Bell said.
