On a day where weather conditions weren't the most ideal for a swim meet - temperatures reached a high of 70 degrees - the Arizona men's and women's swim and dive teams hosted their lone home meet of the semester against the Wisconsin Badgers.
The Badgers boasted a 2-0 record until this weekend, but the No. 4 men's team won its half of the meet, 160-99. The No. 3 women won also won, defeating Wisconsin with a score of 141-119.
"The team did a great job. The first meet always has an impact, and we are looking forward to the rest of the season," said UA head coach Frank Busch.
"We were a little rusty. For the next meet we need to work on the starts and turns," Busch said. "That's just where we are right now, that's all."
Each team had noteworthy performances on both sides, but Busch said there were a few standouts in this meet.
On the men's side, Busch said some of the best performances were clocked in by freshmen Ivan Barnes and Matt Biel and by juniors Lyndon Ferns and Simon Burnett.
Barnes racked up two first-places for the team in the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke events. Biel helped increase the team's overall point total with a first-place finish in the 1,000-yard freestyle and by taking second in the 500-yard freestyle.
Burnett finished in the 100- and 200-yard freestyle. Ferns had impressive showings in several events including a first-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay along with Barnes, Burnett and Nick Thoman. Ferns also placed first in the 50-yard freestyle, while his time of 48.10 helped him capture the title in the 100-yard butterfly.
Busch added that freshman Lacey Nymeyer, sophomore Whitney Myers and junior Jenna Gresdal each performed well for the women's team.
Nymeyer celebrated her birthday Friday by taking second in the 200- and 50-yard freestyle events and by winning the 100-yard freestyle. Nymeyer also helped fellow teammates Gresdal, Meyers and Jessica Hayes take first in the 400-yard freestyle relay.
Meyers helped the women take first in 200-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle relay, while also placing first in 200- and 100-yard butterfly events.
Gresdal took first in 100-yard backstroke and 50-yard freestyle while finishing third in 200-yard backstroke.
On the dive end of the spectrum, the women dominated the one-meter event with Daniela Bemme, Mary Yarrison, Holly Kast, Claire Febvay and Kirssa Cline sweeping the first five places. In the men's one-meter, John Collier took first with sophomore J.J. Aderholt capturing second.
The slightly taller three-meter board wasn't difficult for the Wildcats either, with Collier and Aderholt again taking first and second place. For the women Yarrison took first followed by Febvay and Bemme.
The Wildcats next hit the pool Nov. 19 in Los Angeles against Southern California.
