A student is given a Discman and a CD then asked to opine on each song.

Favorite band: "Toughie. Slightly Stoopid. Have you heard of them?"

Least favorite band: John Mayer

1. Coheed and Cambria - "Blood Red Summer"

Scheid: Are they a popular band? Are they, like, independent?

Wildcat: No. They play them on the radio.

Scheid: Yeah, 'cause I think I've heard them. Not this song, but this band. ... I don't know. What would I describe this as? Are you recording me? Don't even write that. Maybe punk. Punk/pop. ... It was better in the beginning.

Wildcat: Did it sound like anyone?

Scheid: Yeah, but I don't remember the name of the band. I think it would be something someone else would listen to, but I wouldn't personally.

Wildcat: People who listen to what would listen to this?

Scheid: '80s music.

Wildcat: Why?

Scheid: I don't know. I just had that '80s-rock-type theme. The beat. The voice too. ... I don't know what kind of mood it puts me in. I couldn't picture dancing to it. I can't picture working out to it. I can't picture walking to it.

The Muse - "Hysteria"

Scheid: It sounds like Rage Against the Machine maybe. The sound. It's more like metal, heavy metal. Too much of the same tone, so it got boring.

The Thrills - "Not for All the World"

Scheid: Sounds like John Mayer.

Wildcat: Is that good or bad?

Scheid: It's good. It's good. It sounds like Jack Johnson too. A mix of John Mayer and Jack Johnson. Have you heard Jack Johnson?

Wildcat: No.

Scheid: (still listening to song) Really? What do you listen to?

Wildcat: Not John Mayer or Jack Johnson.

Scheid: I used to hate John Mayer. Well, I still kind of do, but ...

Wildcat: The "Your-Body-is-a-Wonderland"-song was all right.

Scheid: That's like the worst song. I mean, all of them are pretty bad, but ...(song ends) I didn't think it was terrible, but it was average.

Wildcat: OK. Can you tell me why? The music?

Scheid: Because it had the same tone the other bands did. Melody and singing.
