UA soccer freshman goalkeeper McCall Smith is one of 12 finalists for Soccer Buzz Magazine's National Freshman of the Year Honor.
Smith is the lone goalkeeper on the list after posting school records in wins, with 15; shutouts, with 11 and goals against average. Smith's 0.52 goals against per game - the Salt Lake City native played every minute in goal during the Wildcats' remarkable run to the Pacific 10 Conference championship after finishing ninth in 2003 - ranked sixth in the nation during the 2004 season.
Smith was also instrumental in helping the Wildcats secure the first NCAA tournament bid in the program's decade-long history.
The winners will be announced later this month after an open vote process where each NCAA Division I coaching staff, along with the staff at Soccer Buzz, decides the winner.
2004 marks the ninth year of the award.
Soccer's Jones, Klein earn Academic All-Pac-10 nods
Wildcat soccer players Althea Jones and Jennifer Klein received All-Academic accolades from the Pac-10 this week, with Jones making the conference's second-team list and Klein receiving honorable mention status.
Jones and Klein, both biology juniors, were key contributors for the Wildcats this season. Jones, of Pickering, Ontario, Canada, tallied a goal and an assist for the Wildcats this season, including the team's only goal in its upset of then-No. 5 UCLA Oct. 31 at Murphey Stadium. Jones played in all 21 matches this season for the Wildcats after receiving Academic-All-Pac-10 Honorable Mention honors during her sophomore season.
Klein, a UA tri-captain from Prescott, played in all but one game for Arizona this season, starting 18 and tallying three goals and four assists.
Wheeler, Frye, Stoudamire up for Senior CLASS award
UA basketball seniors Channing Frye and Salim Stoudamire from the men's team and Dee-Dee Wheeler from the women's team have been chosen as nominees for the Bayer Advantage Senior CLASS Award, presented annually to the nation's top senior for NCAA Division I men's and women's basketball.
Wheeler, a two-time All-Pac-10 selection, was named among the top 30 female candidates. The Chicago native is averaging 14 points and 4.6 rebounds per game so far for the Wildcats, who play two games this weekend while hosting the annual Fiesta Tournament in McKale Center.
Frye, a Phoenix native and first-team All-Pac-10 selection his junior season after averaging 15.9 points and 7.4 rebounds per game, joins Stoudamire, of Portland, Ore., an All-Pac-10 honorable mention selection a year ago from after averaging 16.3 points per game and shooting .415 from 3-point range, among the top 30 male candidates this season.
The Senior CLASS Award - the acronym stands for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School - was launched in the 2001-'02 college basketball season. It is designed to honor the attributes of seniors who remain committed to their university and elect to pursue the many rewards that a senior season can bring, the award comittee said in a press release.
