With their season just a meet old, the Arizona gymnastics team is already looking for a bit of redemption.
After finishing fourth in a low-scoring performance at last week's Super Six Challenge and dropping from No. 13 to No. 21 in the rankings, the Gymcats hope McKale Center will provide a bit of relief.
UA hosts its first meet of the year tonight at 7:30 when No. 6 Michigan State, No. 23 Missouri and Illinois-Chicago come to McKale Center.
"We're extremely excited about it," junior Erin Muirhead said. "It's the first home match, and there's a lot of good schools coming out."
Head coach Bill Ryden said he was a bit surprised by the team's performance last week.
"The freshman had great meets last week, and our veterans had the problems," Ryden said.
Freshman Karin Wurm made her Wildcat debut scoring a 9.8 on the uneven bars, while senior second team All-American Monica Bisordi led the team with a ninth-place overall finish.
For the Wildcats to be successful against the two top-25 teams, they will have to get a more consistent performance out of their upperclassmen.
The No. 6 Spartans come into Tucson off a first-place finish in their meet last week beating then-No.8 Louisiana State, while No. 23 Missouri is hoping to rebound from a loss last weekend at Iowa State.
This early season test for Arizona should prove beneficial heading into the Pacific 10 Conference, which has all seven programs ranked in the preseason coaches poll for the second straight year.
