Members of the Interfraternity Council will put on their dancing shoes and grab the hands of their elders at tonight's Valentine's Day dance with residents from the Fountains at La Cholla retirement community.
For the past three years, IFC and its 21 chapter presidents have attended the Valentine's Day dance held by the Fountains at La Cholla community, 2001 W. Rudasill Road.
The dance, which is a community service opportunity, is a chance for the council and fraternity members to spend time with the elderly women who live at the community, said Michael Katzman, IFC president.
"I would say that this is one of the highlights of their year," said Katzman.
Kaztman said in addition to a good time, the dance lifts the residents' spirits because they are spending time with other people.
"It brings them a lot of joy," Katzman said. "They enjoy socializing and sharing stories about their grandchildren."
Katzman said he was surprised to see so many residents tearing it up on the dance floor.
"It's surprising that they can keep up, a lot of them are firecrackers," Katzman said.
Some members of the Panhellenic Association will also attend tonight's dance, but since 80 percent of the residents are women, Katzman said the men participate more actively.
