A B-flat clarinet and marching baritone were stolen from a backpack Thursday night at the Student Recreation Center, 1400 E. Sixth St.

The backpack's owner told police he was at a barbeque for the band in the pool area at 7:30 p.m. when he left his backpack unattended to play racquetball. When he returned about 8 p.m., the instruments and the backpack were gone.

The items are valued at $1,425.

A 20-year-old man was arrested early Thursday morning when police saw him drink from a beer can in a passing car at the intersection of North Campbell Avenue and East University Boulevard.

Police were seeking charges of minor in possession of alcohol and minor consumption of alcohol against Joshua G. Cook, of the 2900 block of East Fifth Street.

Cook initially hid the Coors Light can and told police he had not been drinking. When police inquired about the can at his side, Cook exited the car and admitted to drinking about eight beers that night. He was cited and released.

A gray purse and its contents were taken Thursday between 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. from an unlocked desk drawer in the Nugent Building.

Witnesses said they followed an unknown man to a basement men's restroom because he looked suspicious carrying a purse. When the man left the building, winesses found the purse in a restroom garbage can.

Four credit cards and a grandfather clock wind-up key were among the items in the purse.

Someone stole a bicycle parked on the east side of the Modern Languages Building Tuesday without damaging its U-lock.

The owner told police the black Crow 10-speed women's bike was U-locked to a bike rack about 2:30 p.m. but was gone three hours later. The U-lock was left behind intact and attached to the rack.

Someone stole a $25 brown, bifold wallet, credit cards and a book of 20 postage stamps Thursday from a knapsack left on a desk in the Family and Consumer Resources Building.
