Derrick Stewart to go on trial in January

The trial of a UA football player charged with aggravated assault will wait until next year.

In a pretrial conference yesterday, Pima County Superior Court Judge Deborah Bernilli set the trial date for Jan. 23. It is expected to last three days.

Derrick Stewart was charged with aggravated assault using a deadly weapon and causing serious injury after he allegedly hit an airman from Davis-Monthan Air Force Base with an object believed to be a microphone or flashlight.

The airman was treated for a broken jaw after the incident, which occurred at the Holiday Inn City Center, 181 W. Broadway Blvd. A party for Pac-10 athletes was being held at the hotel.

Stewart was not present at the short conference, but showed up 10 minutes later and was informed of the date.

Another pretrial conference is scheduled for Nov. 20.

Law discussion

The National Lawyers Guild will be hosting a panel discussion today on the history and lessons of the Sacco and Vanzetti trial and execution today at 7 p.m. in the UA College of Law Room 140.

The Sacco-Vanzetti Case dealt with two Italian immigrants fifty years ago, who were arrested for allegedly taking part in an armed robbery during which a guard was killed. While on trial, their radical political beliefs and immigrant background were used against them by the prosecution.

Despite a worldwide effort to save their lives after they were sentenced to death, the men were executed in 1927.
