Friday afternoon the UA Tricats kicked off its first 24-hour "Triathlon-athon" Ÿ a completely indoor triathlon at the Student Recreation Center.

Seton Claggett on the stationary bike, Nancy Conway swimming laps and Laura Dragoo, running on the track, launched the event at 5 p.m.

Claggett, the club's treasurer, said that in 24 hours, 25 UA students biked 500 miles, ran 130 miles and swam 85,000 yards.

Each participant was expected to swim, bike and run for an hour apiece.

"Swimming was the hardest because you were alone and you had to work hard just to keep warm," said Noah Wasmer, sophomore Tricat who swam from 9 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Gary Gongwer, who worked from 1a.m. to 5 a.m. said he enjoyed being in the center during its off hours.

"(Although) it was a fairly solo experience, it was fun because I still got a chance to hang out with other (triathletes)," Gongwer said.

Claggett said the club earned more than $1,250 by signing up sponsors for the event. The club also received helmets, socks and gloves from Full Cycle, swimming caps and towels from Patio, Pools and Spas and Powerbars from Powerbar.

All but $100, which will be awarded to the three top fund-raisers, will go to the Tricats.
