Skate damage rampant

Editor:

Yvonne Condes' article about rollerblading ("'Rollerblading' proves to be increasingly harmful," Oct. 6) reasonably addressed the potential hazards of this activity. However, I was dismayed that the article ignored the hazards to pedestrians and the blatant destruction of public property that results from rollerbladers and skateboarders.

The photograph accompanying the article clearly showed a band of paint scraped from the guardrail upon which the skater was sliding. This type of damage, which ranges from scraped paint to broken concrete benches and steps, is rampant on this campus. This office has even observed concrete structures ruined by having wax rubbed into the surface to make them easier to slide on.

I encourage members of the campus community who observe property destruction such as this to report it to the University Police Department.
