Four assaults were reported Thursday night at the opening of last weekend's Spring Fling festivities.

Hector Pinedo, 18, of the 100 block of South Calle Avenida De Porvenir, was arrested and charged with minor in possession of alcohol and two counts of aggravated assault. He was arrested after an officer saw him attack another man near the exit of Spring Fling.

The officer said he saw Pinedo approach the victim and strike him in the face. When the victim stumbled and fell, Pinedo and two friends jumped him and started kicking and punching him.

Pinedo's friends, John Cadena, 19, of the 2900 block of North Walnut Road and a 17-year-old boy, were also arrested and charged with minor in possession and disturbing the peace.

After calling for backup, the officer attempted to break up the fight and was struck by Pinedo in the process. Pinedo ran and the officer pursued. Backup arrived and police were able to apprehend Pinedo, but reportedly were forced to hit him eight to ten times with batons before he would stop struggling.

Pinedo was arrested and taken to Pima County Jail for processing.
