The Arizona men's club lacrosse team earned itself a trip to the Western Collegiate Lacrosse League playoffs by beating UCLA 20-8 Saturday night.

It was a must-win game for the UA because going into it, both the Laxcats and the Bruins had identical records Ä and the team that won would go to the WCLL quarterfinals to meet Whittier next weekend.

Had Arizona lost the game, it would have missed the playoffs for the second year in a row.

However, the UA played a strong all-around game during which the team exhibited hustle and the players were able to maintain their concentration Ä characteristics that have been lacking all season.

The defense turned out an impressive game. In the first half, it only allowed the Bruins four goals.

Laxcat goalie Tom Hatfield, playing for the ineligible Bill Steelman, demonstrated hard work in making 20 saves.

Offensively, there was nothing lacking for Arizona. Bret Withey had six goals and four assists and Scott Carlin had three goals and five assists.

UA coach Mickey-Miles Felton was very happy with the way his team was able to rise to the occasion.

"I am very pleased with the win," Felton said. "It is such a big relief to make it to the playoffs. The team has a lot to feel good about."
