IN BRIEF

BODELWYDDAN, Wales (AP) Ä A mother was reunited with her newborn baby Saturday, a day after the child was kidnapped from a hospital maternity ward.

Police with tracker dogs and a Royal Air Force helicopter had searched for the four-day-old girl. She apparently was kidnapped by a woman who had befriended the child's mother.

Christine Owens appeared on Independent Television News cradling her baby, Lydia.

Police returned the baby, but wouldn't describe the circumstances, saying only that two people from Rhyll in northern Wales were helping in the inquiry. Police said the woman they believe took Lydia from Glan Clwyd General Hospital at Bodelwyddan was 30 to 40 years old. mid

BROOKLINE, Mass. (AP) Ä Anti-abortion protests resumed Saturday at a clinic where one of two women were killed by a gunman six weeks ago.

About 90 people, some kneeling on the wet pavement and others holding rosaries, prayed in front of the Planned Parenthood clinic.

Although a few lone protesters have appeared, this was the first organized protest since the Dec. 30 shootings.

''We feel we are doing what God wants us to do,'' said Bob Delery, head of Our Lady's Crusaders for Life, which holds the prayer meetings on the second Saturday of each month.

John C. Salvi III, a student hairdresser from Hampton, N.H., was charged in the slayings of the two receptionists, one at Planned Parenthood and the other at the nearby Preterm Health Services.

Delery's group had canceled its January protest. ''We had enough sense to know the week after the shootings you're not going to do any good coming out here,'' he said.

Boston's Cardinal Bernard Law has called for a stop to clinic protests.

''It's quite sad that after the terror that occurred here and at Preterm only six weeks ago that they are back, creating this climate of fear and violence that spawned John Salvi,'' said Nicki Nichols Gamble, president of the Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts.

Preterm, which is on the same street in this Boston suburb, hasn't had any large protests since the shootings, a clinic spokeswoman said.
