The new two-and-three-year terms for the UA Faculty Senate have been filled.

44 faculty members ran for 32 positions in various areas of the University of Arizona Faculty Senate. The ballots were turned in Friday and were counted yesterday. All terms begin in May.

John Schwarz, a political science professor, was elected as the new chairman of the faculty, defeating chairman J.D. Garcia, a physics professor. The chairman serves for two years.

Schwarz said he is "very pleased" with the results and hopes to fulfill the platform he ran on. His goal is to "achieve a partnership between the faculty and administration in the making of policies" that affect the university. He is concerned about the core curriculum proposal and new proposals for tenure review and merit pay for faculty.

Garcia, who served for four years, said he was "a little disappointed" by the results because he was involved in senate changes and hoped to complete them.

Schwarz said he is grateful for the progress Garcia made during his term and will be able to "move ahead because of that progress."
