The No. 10 Arizona women's tennis team continued its undefeated season yesterday with a 7-0 sweep of No. 33 San Diego State at the Robson Tennis Center.Arizona (7-0) didn't drop a set on the day and had the match secured after the singles round which the Wildcats won 6-0.
All-American Vicky Maes, playing on two-days rest after completing the Rolex Intercollegiate Championships in Dallas, beat the Aztecs' Merete Lindahl 6-3, 6-2.
"Anybody who had come back from an indoor tournament and played the whole week would of been a little tired. I didn't expect to play my best tennis, but I played good enough to win," Maes said.
Arizona's No. 2 singles player Stephanie Sammaritano handed Christy Popstra a 6-1, 6-2 defeat while No. 3 sophomore Betsy Miringoff finished off Emma Doyle 6-2, 6-1 for her 15th win of the season.
"So far I'm feeling pretty confident. My game is good, and I'm in great shape," Miringoff said. "Those are three goals I would like to keep."
Karen Goldstein, playing her first match at No. 4 singles, defeated Tamara Bridges 6-2, 6-1.
"I was pretty nervous at first because I really wanted to play well, but it went fine," Goldstein said.
Rounding out the performance was Khristen Pietrucka's 6-2, 6-2 win over Sarah Donovan and Monique Allegre's 6-1, 6-1 defeat of Simone Howard at the five and six positions, respectively.
San Diego State agreed to play two pro-set doubles matches despite the fact that the outcome of the match was already decided.
In a pro-set match, the players play one set, with the victory going to the first doubles team to win eight games.
UA doubles partners Sammaritano and Goldstein defeated Popstra and Howard 8-3 and partners Miringoff and Allegre beat the Aztecs' Doyle and Lindahl 8-6. This was the third shutout of the year for Arizona. They had already blanked Iowa (9-0) and Southern Methodist University (7-0).
