University police assisted the Tucson Police Department with a fight at East Sixth Street and North Park Avenue at 9:31 p.m. Saturday.

University officers arrested John P. Ferlan, 19, of the 8000 block of East Eighth Street, who witnesses said initiated a fight with another male.

Bystanders directed officers to the volleyball courts north of Arizona-Sonora Residence Hall, 910 E. Fifth St., where the officers found a group of people pinning Ferlan to the ground. Ferlan had upper body abrasions and was bleeding from the mouth, but he refused medical attention.

Witnesses said Ferlan had initiated the fight with another male at the scene. That male confirmed the witnesses' reports.

After Tucson officers arrived, Ferlan was handcuffed and placed in a patrol car. Police reports indicate Ferlan was verbally abusive, uncooperative, and persisted in yelling obscenities at officers.

Ferlan's girlfriend, who was also at the scene, told police "he is kind of psycho" and had been drinking all day.

Police took Ferlan to Pima County Jail for holding.

A female resident of Coronado Hall, 822 E. Fifth St., called police after she reportedly received a harassing phone call from a male resident of the same hall.

At 2:05 a.m. Saturday, the male called the student's room and allegedly called her a "bitch" and a "trick."

When police contacted the male resident, he admitted to calling the female a "bitch," but also played an answering machine tape of a female who called him a "cocksucker" and warned him not to call her or she would "kill him."

Both residents were advised not to contact each other again.

A UA employee at Steward Observatory, 933 N. Cherry Ave., called police Friday after someone attempted to break into an office between 4 p.m. Thursday and 8:45 a.m. Friday.

One screw was removed from the door vent and there were scratches on other parts of the vent, police reports stated.

Nothing was stolen, but last semester, a computer was stolen from the same office.

The building supervisor has arranged to fix the door.

University police arrested three Tucson residents over the weekend for charges related to driving under the influence of alcohol.

William J. Johnson, 23, of the 7100 block of North Leonardo da Vinci Way, was arrested Saturday on charges of DUI and DUI with a blood-alcohol content above .10.

At 1:17 a.m., officers pulled over the red pickup truck Johnson was driving after they observed it moving erratically near the corner of North Stone Avenue and East Lester.

After he admitted to drinking earlier in the evening, Johnson failed field sobriety tests and later, an Intoxilyzer test showed his BAC to be .190. He was cited and released.

In a separate incident, police arrested a 16-year old Tucson boy at 1:20 a.m. Saturday on charges of DUI, DUI with a blood-alcohol content above .10, minor operating a vehicle with alcohol in the body, and speeding.

Police stopped the 1993 Ford sedan the boy was driving after clocking it at 55 mph near the intersection of East Sixth Street and North Sixth Avenue.

The driver denied drinking, but failed field sobriety tests. A vehicle search yielded three cans of beer and a small baggie of marijuana. A police spokesman could not be reached yesterday to explain why drug charges were not filed.

The youth was later found to have a BAC of .119. He was cited and released to his parents.

In an unrelated incident, Esther L. Snow, 21, of a general delivery address, was arrested on a charge of DUI at North Fourth Avenue and East Fifth Street after police pulled her over for driving without headlights.

Snow failed field sobriety tests, but later refused to submit to Intoxilyzer exams. She was cited and released to a friend.

Between 6 p.m. Friday and 12 p.m. Saturday, someone took a gray Cannondale F-500 mountain bicycle from the sleeping porch at Phi Gamma Delta, 1801 E. First St.

The bicycle is valued at $877.50.

The windshield of a student's 1987 Ford Taurus was smashed between 1 and 6:30 p.m. Feb. 20 while the car was parked at 620 N. Vine Ave.

Police reports indicate the car was facing west, directly behind a basketball hoop. Police reports also indicate the damage approximates the size of a basketball. Police have no suspects.
