Guard hospitalized after prison fight over T-shirt

FORT LEAVENWORTH, Kan. € Soldiers used fire hoses and pepper spray to free a guard and quell a five-hour military prison uprising that broke out over a T-shirt.

About 140 specially trained military police soldiers stormed the embattled wing of the U.S. Disciplinary Barracks, freed the hostage and restored order Sunday, said Janet Wray, prison spokeswoman.

The guard, Pfc. Thomas Enochs, was hospitalized in satisfactory condition with undisclosed injuries. Three other guards and three inmates were treated for minor injuries, Wray said.

The wing, which houses 168 inmates, was placed under a lockdown. It was unclear how many were involved in the standoff, which broke out after Enochs confronted an inmate for wearing a T-shirt on his head.

Katharine Hepburn recovering from pneumonia

NEW YORK € Katharine Hepburn was hospitalized last week with pneumonia and is resting at her Connecticut home, the Daily News reported yesterday.

The 88-year-old actress was admitted to Manhattan's Lenox Hill Hospital last week under an assumed name, and hospital sources told the News she was very ill and her doctors at one point had not expected her to live.

She has been discharged, but it was not clear when. Family members told the newspaper that she was resting comfortably at her Connecticut home. As for whether she was out of danger, a sister-in-law, Mrs. Robert Hepburn, said: ''No, I can't say that. She's working through it.''
