For the first time in UA history, the women's tennis team has the No. 1 singles player in the nation, is ranked No. 3 in the country, and has four ranked singles players.

Arizona's powerhouse sophomore Vicky Maes (38-5) jumped to the No. 1 singles spot in the rankings released yesterday by the International Tennis Association. Second seed junior Stephanie Sammaritano vaulted 39 spots to No. 48, while third seed sophomore Betsy Miringoff moved up to No. 54. Fourth seed freshman Karen Goldstein made her debut in the polls at No. 99.

Arizona jumped to the No. 3 spot in the polls, the first time in school history they've been ranked higher than fourth. They were ranked No. 4 in the last rankings and were ranked No. 4 last year.

The doubles team of Maes and Khristen Pietrucha leaped to No. 15, while Sammaritano and Goldstein dropped to a tie at 27th.

Arizona takes a break from competition this week, but returns to action when they head up north to take on nemesis Arizona State March 26. The Sun Devils are ranked No. 23.

"I'm really pleased with our new ranking," said UA head coach Becky Bell. "We just have to keep playing well."
