Purdy leads Arizona to 6th-place finish

The Arizona men's golf team finished a two-week swing through Texas with a sixth-place performance at the 30th annual Cleveland Golf/Morris Williams Intercollegiate in Austin.

The Wildcats, who moved up to No. 4 in the Rolex Collegiate men's golf rankings, shot a team total of 916 which was 30 strokes behind winner Florida. Pacific 10 Conference rival Southern Cal finished ninth.

UA senior Ted Purdy, who is ranked fifth in the individual rankings, fired rounds of 73, 78 and 75 to tie with eight other golfers in ninth place. It was Purdy's fifth top-10 finish of the season. Rory Sabbatini shot a final round of 72 to tie for 25th, his fifth top-25 finish of the season. Andy Barnes finished 27th, Gary Matthews was tied for 36th and Matt Bergstrom finished tied for 38th.

The week before in Houston, UA finished eighth in the Golf Digest Invitational.

On the Woodlands TPC course, Arizona shot rounds of 297 and 302 to finish three strokes ahead of Stanford. The tournament was won by defending NCAA champion and current No. 1-ranked Oklahoma St.

Individually, Barnes performed the best for the Wildcats with consecutive rounds of 73 to finish tied for sixth. Matthews finished at 150, Purdy at 151 and Bergstrom at 152.
