The No. 1 ranked Arizona softball team began the PONY/Louisville Tournament in Fullerton, Calif. with two wins yesterday.

UA ran their record to 24-2 with a 2-1 win over Oklahoma. That win came on the heels of a 6-5 triumph over DePaul.

Against the Blue Demons, Lisa Pitt hit two home runs. The second shot broke a 5-5 tie in the fifth inning.

The Wildcats play South Carolina today before beginning the elimination segment of the tournament.

The UA gymnastics team will face its greatest challenge of the year when it heads up to Corvallis, Ore., tomorrow for the Pacific 10 Conference championships.

The Pac-10 is basically a laundry list of the top 20 teams with No. 6 Oregon State (14-4 overall, 4-2 in Pac-10), the eighth-ranked UA (20-2, 5-1), No. 9 UCLA (11-2, 5-2), No. 11 Arizona State (8-3, 3-2), No. 16 Washington (12-7, 2-4), and No. 19 Stanford (2-6, 0-5). The only team not in the top 20 is California (15-8, 1-4). The Bears are ranked 26th.

One thing that worries coaches about these large meets is the waiting time between events. Not only is it rough on the gymnasts mentally, but the down time also increases their chances for injury.

"The setup is not the best of worlds in gymnastics," said Arizona coach Jim Gault. "It's always better to go through the events with as little waiting time as possible."

Arizona will again be looking to freshman Heidi Hornbeek to lead the way. Hornbeek is ranked 13th in the nation in the all-around. She will be joined by junior Tenli Poggemeyer. After succumbing to injury for most of the season, she recorded a season-high all-around score of 38.8 last weekend against Washington.

It is billed as the Jim Click Wildcat Shootout, and a shootout it may very well turn out to be, as talented squads from Colorado, Idaho, Northern Iowa and Oklahoma will try to dethrone UA, the three-time defending champions.

"All four teams that are coming for the Shootout are very strong track and field schools," UA head coach Dave Murray said.

The Shootout will be held at Roy P. Drachman Stadium.

The UA men are led by junior Chima Ugwu in the throws. Last week Ugwu won both the shot put and the discus at the Willie Williams Classic. Ugwu's 62 foot, 10 3/4 inch effort in the shot put qualified him for the NCAA Outdoor Championships, and he also provisionally qualified in the discus.

Three UA women € Holly Montoya (hammer throw), Michelle Johnson (400-meter hurdles) and Amy Skieresz (3,000 meters) - also provisionally qualified for the championships.
